The pub was demolished illegally by developers CLTX last April while it was being considered for Grade II listed status.
The developers appeal against Westminster City Council’s planning committee’s refusal to replace the pub with flats and a basement/ground floor pub was dismissed.
What a superb victory for the Maida Vale community, the friends of the Carlton Tavern, the council and your hard working councillors Jan Prendergast and Tom Crockett.
Cllr Jan Prendergast said: “My heartfelt thanks go out to all those who fought so hard for this result and who supported me in my wish to see, these feckless developers brought to book. They brought something fearful to us on that dreadful day but something very special happened too. Our community rose up and protested and now the developers really have had the book well and truly thrown at them. I explained at the hearing that we had the three things that make a village the pub, the green and the church and I walked the inspector round to show him.”
Cllr Tom Crockett said: “I am delighted by the decision of the planning inspectorate and that the voice of the community, whom I have had the pleasure of representing in this matter, has been heeded. I hope the Carlton Tavern serves as a byword for anyone looking to protect their local buildings and history, and as a warning to those who may wish to destroy it without authorisation driven by profit.”
