New Public Green Space and Playground to transform Sussex Street Play Area

The Sussex Street play area holds lots of childhood memories for residents young and old. We were all disappointed when it was confirmed that the Council had rented the play ground to a private school without any consultation with councillors or local people. We were able to secure  a couple of open sessions for local children Fridays 4-6pm and Saturdays, 10am-1pm.

However, we were determined to ensure the area is put to better use for everyone to enjoy and have been lobbying the Council to consider our idea. Our tenacity has paid off! We are delighted that our application to Westminster’s Community Investment Levy Committee was successful and we have secured £500,000 to completely transformed the site into a green, open space for everyone to enjoy with a brand-new play area included.

Cllr Jacqui Wilkinson explained: "We are thrilled that this area is going to become a truly open and green space for everyone. It’s a large area and therefore, the plan is for it to be a space everyone can enjoy whether it’s bringing children to play or people who want to enjoy some fresh air and relax."

Over the next year or so the local councillors will work with council officers and consult with residents on what they want for their new green space.
