14 new trees have been planted down the centre of St George’s Drive as part of a greening scheme first proposed by the last Conservative administration.
However, errors were made in the consultation with some local people not being consulted by the Labour-run council. Eventually a number of concerns around root infiltration were raised and dealt with.
The trees are American Sweetgum trees and should give a wonderful display as their leaves change colour in the autumn. The benefits of street trees include shading to reduce the urban heat island effect, Carbon Dioxide absorption to reduce climate change and absorbing pollutants to clean the air we breathe. If you would like to support further tree planting in Westminster then please visit the Westminster Tree Trust.
Cllr Jim Glen explained, "Trees are vital for our well-being and to boost biodiversity. Schemes such as this are a very important step towards creating a desirable city for us all to live in."
