Westminster Matters: Leader's Update March 2019

Westminster Matters: An update from Cllr Nickie Aiken, Leader of Westminster City Council

It has been an incredibly busy time since I last updated you on the work of Conservative-run Westminster City Council.

Lord's local resident ticket offer

Your local councillors have secured FREE cricket tickets this summer from Lord’s for local residents. A maximum of five tickets are available per household for Specsavers Middlesex County Championship matches, MCC matches and Royal London One-Day cup group matches.

Parking on Estates and new Traffic Orders

Parking enforcement on Council estates is to be transferred to the Council’s parking enforcement teams under a ‘Traffic Management Order’ (TMO), starting with Churchill Gardens in April. Existing permit holders will be guaranteed a replacement permit at no extra charge.

Pavement left as trip hazard

The maintenance of our highways and pavements across Westminster is a priority for the council and improvements are being made all the time.

A supporting hand for those sleeping on the streets

Sadly we continue to see an increase in the number of rough sleepers on our streets. Westminster attracts more than the next four boroughs combined. Being the “capital of the capital” has always meant more people bedding down on our streets.

Success on tackling drug dealing

The biggest concern raised by our residents over recent months is the increase in drug dealing, open drug taking and begging.

Meetings with Narrow Boat owners

Following a series of break-ins to a number of narrow boats on the Little Venice canal, Cllr Caplan organised a meeting with the local police and the Canal and River Trust. This was preceded by a walkabout along the canal to review the security of the site.

Ebury Bridge Estate: More homes and Community spaces

Westminster Council is accelerating its home-building programme in Churchill Ward with Phase 1 of Ebury Bridge estate renewal set to deliver 216 flats, including 130 replacement social rent homes.
