Earlier this year, with your support, the Pedicabs (London) Act 2024 became law. The Act gave Transport for London the power to finally regulate pedicabs.
Four months on, the Labour Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is sitting on his hands. The Mayor chairs TfL, and despite their promises, the consultation has still not been launched.
As a result, local people continue to be blighted by pedicab riders who blare music, block roads and pavements, cause a real nuisance and charge rip-off fares with hundreds of pounds for journeys of just a few minutes. This cannot go on.
In July, TfL confirmed to ITV News London that they plan to launch the required consultation in 2025.
There is simply no logical reason for this.
TfL already licenses black cabs and private hire vehicles, and the Mayor is sitting on his hands on pedicabs. Meanwhile, local people and tourists continue to suffer.
We are calling on the Mayor of London to implement pedicab licensing and on Labour-led Westminster City Council to hold the Labour Mayor to account. We all agree we need the licensing scheme. There is no excuse for further delay.
