The Onion Garden was officially opened on Thursday 1st June by the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Cllr Patricia McAllister. Pictured are the Lord Mayor with waistcoat wearing Jens Jakobson and the St James councillors.
It was a wonderful occasion attended by over 100 people from neighbourhoods across Victoria and St James’s Park. The launch is significant because it heralds the start of planning for the garden extension. This will see adjacent wasteland converted into a thriving garden and educational space for the local community.
If you haven’t been to the Onion Garden you can find it behind City Hall at 5 Seaforth Place. As well as wonderful trees and plants there is a coffee stall. You’ll also likely meet the owner Jens Jakobson to buy flowers to take home.
The garden’s success has been down to a true collaboration. Spearheaded by Jens who is the “creator in chief” and with support from the local community, a local property owner and also the St James’s Councillors, the garden successfully moved a few years ago from outside the Blewcoat School to Seaforth Place. Our MP Nickie Aiken recently interviewed Jens for her podcast series Two Cities Heroes. We’re delighted to see it flourish and play such an important local role in the neighbourhood.
