The Onion Garden was officially opened on Thursday 1st June by the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Cllr Patricia McAllister.

At the end of June local people together with Trustees of the Covent Garden Area Trust accompanied by Town Crier Alan Myatt and local entertainers paraded around Covent Garden’s Piazza.
Following tradition they stopped at intervals so that a red apple and a posy of flowers can be handed over to representatives of the freeholders as the “peppercorn” rent due each year for the landmark Covent Garden properties leased to the Trust.
St. James's councillor Louise Hyams says: "It is a pleasure to join the celebrations once again. The Rent Ceremony is a very important date in the Covent Garden calendar and a timely reminder of how much we value the architectural history of the area."
